②Which is the greater threat to humankind, terrorism or world hunger?(テロと飢餓ではどちらが脅威か)

飢餓の方が脅威。理由は以下の２点。

・飢餓がテロの根本原因(root cause)の１つ

・飢餓の方がより広範囲に影響(pervasive/worldwide effects)を及ぼす

アーギュメント例

・World hunger has more pervasive effects on the world than terrorist attacks. According to UN, one-ninth of people in the world are suffering hunger problem, and this rate is much higher than terrorism.

・World hunger is a root cause of terrorism because people suffering from poverty like hunger are likely to release their negative passion by taking violent way like terrorist attack. Therefore, terrorism will never be eradicated unless we solve poverty problem.

③What is the root cause of terrorism /war?

前のトピックと関連して。原因は以下の２点。

・貧困←これによるネガティブな感情を発散するために暴力に訴えることもあるので

・思想の対立(ideological conflicts)←宗教的対立など

アーギュメント例

・Poverty is a root cause of terrorism. People suffering from poverty like hunger and malnutrition are likely to take violent way like terrorist attack to release their negative passion. Therefore, poverty is the root cause of terrorism.

・Ideological conflicts is a root cause of terrorism. For example, IS, Islamic State often  does terrorist attack around the world to prove their lreligious correctness. 

④Is it possible to realize world peace?/Is war avoidable?

どちらもノー。理由は以下。

・思想の対立は解消が難しい(ideological conflicts are iradicable)

・貧困は解決困難

・地球温暖化を止められない(global warming is unstopable)

貧困はさらに、それが原因で争いが起きることにつなげられる。また地球温暖化は、アメリカがパリ協定を脱退したこともあってタイムリーなアーギュメントになると思う。

正当化される戦争はあるかという関連トピックでは、

generally no, but it’s acceptable on condition that it’s necessary to stop genocide

などとして、さらにナチス虐殺(genocide)の例などを挙げれば説得力が増す。

⑤Should capital punishment be abolished?

これは頻出のトピック。でたらラッキーと思えるくらい対策しておきたい。立場はイエス。理由は以下。

・無実の人に死刑執行のリスク(risks of executing innocent people)

・犯人の更正の機会を奪う(deprive criminals of a chance for rehabilitation and compensation)

・命の終わりを人間が決める非人道的制度(inhumane judging system which allows human to decide the end of life)

・生存権(the right to live)に反する
